The United States has warned of a “credible threat” against establishments and hotels in Senegal’s capital of Dakar, though only few details have been released. U.S. Embassy personnel have been banned from staying at seaside hotels.
A security message sent to U.S. citizens in Senegal said the embassy was aware of a “credible threat” related to potential terrorist activity in Dakar. The message did not disclose the type of threat or how the information was received.
“The U.S. Embassy advises U.S. citizens to be vigilant when visiting establishments and staying at hotels frequented by Westerners due to a credible threat related to potential terrorist activity in Dakar,” the message said.
U.S. citizens should expect to encounter increased levels of security screening while traveling around Dakar, the embassy said. It added that U.S. Embassy personnel will not be permitted to stay at seaside hotels in Dakar until the first week of December.
“Review your personal security plans, remain aware of your surroundings, including local events, and monitor local news stations for updates,” the message said. “Be vigilant and take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security.”
Other details were not immediately available.
Senegal, which is located in West Africa and is home to a number of Western businesses and UN agencies, has not been the target of any major terrorist attacks, but some have feared an increasing threat from al-Qaeda after attacks in Burkina Faso and neighboring Mali.
