A pick-up truck has run over people in Lower Manhattan, killing at least six people and injuring more than a dozen others in an apparent act of terror, officials and witnesses say. The suspect was shot by police and taken into custody.

The incident happened just after 3 p.m. on Tuesday when a vehicle entered a pedestrian and bike path along West Street, a few blocks north of Chambers Street. The area is near Stuyvesant High School and just a few blocks from the World Trade Center.

“The vehicle struck multiple people on the path. There are several fatalities and numerous people injured,” a spokesperson for the New York Police Department said. The vehicle then continued south before striking a school bus.

“The suspect exited the vehicle displaying imitation firearms and was shot by NYPD,” police said, adding that the suspect was taken into custody. There was no immediate word on his condition, identity or what may have been his motivation.

Police sources confirmed that at least 6 people had been killed in what appeared to be an act of terrorism, but officials added that the investigation was still in the early stages. At least 15 people were injured, some of whom were seriously hurt.

“Expect many emergency personnel in the area,” police added.

Eric Phillips, a spokesman for the mayor, said there was no indication of an ongoing threat to the public. “Mayor’s been briefed on extremely preliminary info. NO active threat,” he said. Schools in the area were put on lockdown.
