The eighth installment in the main “Star Wars” film series, which is currently known as “Star Wars: Episode VIII”, has been named “Star Wars: The Last Jedi’. The movie will be released by the end of the year.

“We have the greatest fans in this or any other galaxy,” Lucasfilm, which is owned by Disney, said in a statement on Monday. “In appreciation of the fans, we wanted them to be the first to know the title of the next chapter in the Skywalker saga: STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI.”

Principal photography for the movie began in February 2016 and filming wrapped up over the summer. The movie was written and directed by Rian Johnson and produced by Kathleen Kennedy and Ram Bergman. J.J. Abrams, Jason McGatlin, and Tom Karnowski served as executive producers.

“Star Wars: The Last Jedi” is scheduled to be released on December 15, 2017.

The movie follows the December 2015 release of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”, which became the highest-grossing film of all time in North America, taking just 20 days to shatter the domestic record set by “Avatar” in 2009. The success of a winter release prompted Lucasfilm to move the release of the new movie from May 2017 to December 15, 2017.
