Prince Philip, the husband of Queen Elizabeth II, has been hospitalized at a private hospital in London to receive treatment for an infection, the royal palace said on Wednesday, adding that he is in “good spirits.”
The 96-year-old prince left Windsor Castle in Berkshire on Tuesday evening and was driven to King Edward VII Hospital in London on the advice of a doctor. He is receiving treatment for an infection which resulted from a pre-existing condition.
“Prince Philip is in good spirits and is disappointed to be missing the State Opening of Parliament and Royal Ascot,” Buckingham Palace said in a brief statement, adding that Queen Elizabeth II was being kept informed while continuing with her schedule.
Buckingham Palace confirmed later on Wednesday that Prince Philip would stay in hospital for a second night.
The queen’s husband is known to be active and robust for his age, although he suffered a few health scares in recent years. He was hospitalized in June 2013 to undergo exploratory surgery on his abdomen, forcing him to be hospitalized for 11 days before taking a 2-month period of convalescence.
The prince was also hospitalized in June 2012 when he developed a bladder infection, just a day after he accompanied his wife on a royal barge to mark the Queen’s diamond jubilee. It followed a hospitalization in December 2011, when Prince Philip was found to have a blocked coronary artery and underwent a “minimally invasive” procedure of coronary stenting.
