Planned Parenthood says it will no longer take payments to pay for costs associated with its fetal tissue program after coming under fire from anti-abortion activists.
The group made the announcement in a letter sent Tuesday by Planned Parenthood’s president, Cecile Richards, to Dr. Francis Collins, the director of the National Institutes of Health, according to NBC News.
“Planned Parenthood’s policies on fetal tissue donation already exceed the legal requirements,” Richards wrote, as quoted by NBC News. “Now we’re going even further in order to take away any basis for attacking Planned Parenthood to advance an anti-abortion political agenda.”
The move comes after a series of anti-abortion videos surfaced claiming that the organization was seeking profits by providing post-abortion fetal tissue to researchers, the Associated Press reports.
