The Los Angeles Rams have fired Jeff Fisher from his head coaching duties, the team announced on Monday, just a day after the team’s loss to the Atlanta Falcons tied Fisher with Dan Reeves for having the most losses in his career.

“Making a decision such as this – especially during the season – is one of the most difficult in sports,” Rams owner and chairman Stan Kroenke said in a statement on Monday. “I have great respect for Jeff as a coach, person, father and friend.”

He added: “[Jeff] has worked tirelessly despite some challenging circumstances .. However, this is the right time to make a change as our performance has not lived up to my or our fans’ expectations. We are all focused on improving as an organization and building a team that makes Los Angeles proud.”

Kroenke explained that the team’s eventual goal is to celebrate a Super Bowl title in Los Angeles, adding that Monday’s decision to part ways with Fisher is “the first step to bring us closer to that goal.”

Fisher was hired as head coach of the Rams in 2012 and he signed a contract extension just earlier this month. Monday’s decision came after the Rams lost to the Atlanta Falcons 42-14, marking Fisher’s 165th loss of his career and tying him with Dan Reeves for the NFL coach with the most losses on his name.
