Legendary British actor John Hurt, who is best remembered for his roles in movies such as “The Elephant Man,” “Midnight Express”, and several “Harry Potter” films, has died after a battle with cancer. He was 77 years old.

Hurt’s death was reported on early Saturday morning but details about the exact time and place of his death were not immediately available. His Twitter, Facebook, and official website were all deleted on Friday.

Hurt was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2015 and was initially given the all clear several months later, but his agent told the Press Association (PA) on early Saturday that the actor had died after a battle with pancreatic cancer.

“Sadly the story is indeed true. A statement will be forthcoming in due course,” Charles McDonald, the actor’s spokesman, told BNO News when asked for confirmation.

Mel Brooks, who was involved in the production of “The Elephant Man”, expressed his sadness over Hurt’s passing. “He was a truly magnificent talent. No one could have played The Elephant Man more memorably. He carried that film into cinematic immortality. He will be sorely missed,” Brooks said.

Hurt, who was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in the summer of 2015, had a career spanning decades. His work included “The Elephant Man”, “Captain Corelli’s Mandolin”, “Midnight Express”, “Alien”, and 3 “Harry Potter” films. He also appeared in “Doctor Who” as the War Doctor.

Hurt was nominated for Oscars for both “The Elephant Man” and “Midnight Express”.
