A gunman has opened fire at a UPS building in San Francisco, killing three people and injuring two others before turning the gun on himself, local officials say. A motive for the killings was not immediately known.

The incident happened at about 8:55 a.m. PT on Wednesday when police were called to reports of an active shooter at the UPS San Francisco Customer Center on San Bruno Avenue. A large number of emergency services responded to the scene.

Police said the suspect – who was dressed in a UPS uniform – was attending a morning meeting for drivers when he pulled out at least one firearm and started shooting. Witnesses elsewhere in the building said they heard up to a dozen shots being fired.

“Multiple officers responded and determined the suspect was in the building,” the San Francisco Police Department said in a statement. “One contact team located the suspect who was still armed with an assault pistol. The suspect put the gun to his head and discharged the weapon.”

A total of 4 people were killed in the shooting, including three UPS employees and the suspected shooter. Two other victims were transported to San Francisco General Hospital, where there was no immediate word on their conditions.

The suspect was identified by local media as San Francisco resident Jimmy Lam, who is believed to have worked for UPS, possibly as a driver. It was not immediately known what may have been the motive for the killings but police said there was no indication of terrorism.

“The company is saddened and deeply concerned about affected employees, family members and the community we share,” UPS said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with all those touched by this incident. To assist our employees during this time, UPS has made professional counseling available.”

The UPS San Francisco Customer Center is an area package sorting hub and package delivery center. It is located in the Potrero Hill neighborhood and employs approximately 350 people, according to the company.
