Aeromexico plane carrying 101 people crashes in northern Mexico

An Aeromexico passenger plane carrying at least 100 people has crashed near an airport in the Mexican city of Durango, officials and witnesses say. There was no immediate word on casualties.

The accident happened at 4 p.m. on Tuesday when the aircraft, an Embraer 190, went down in a field not far from General Guadalupe Victoria International Airport. Photos from the scene showed dark smoke rising from the scene.

The accident involves Aeromexico flight AM2431, which took off from Durango for a flight to Mexico City. Transportation Secretary Gerardo Ruiz Esparza said it was carrying 101 people, including 97 passengers and 4 crew members.

There was no immediate word on the fate of those on board. “Aeroméxico is aware of an accident in Durango and we are working to verify information and get more details,” the airline said.
