Two people have been killed and four others have been injured after a stabbing spree involving the Silver City Galleria mall in Taunton, Massachusetts, police say. The suspect was shot and killed after crashing his car into a store’s entrance.

The incident began on early Tuesday evening when two women were stabbed at a residence on Myricks Street in Taunton. The suspect fled the scene and then drove his car into the Macy’s entrance at the nearby mall, where he went on to stab four more people.

Massachusetts State Police said the suspect – who has since been identified as 28-year-old Arthur Darosa – was shot at the mall by an off-duty police officer. The Silver City Galleria mall was initially placed on lockdown but customers were later evacuated once the area had been cleared.

“Numerous patrols and investigative and specialized units of state and local police are at the crime scenes,” state police said in a statement, which provided no specific details about a possible motive for the stabbings.

Bristol County District Attorney Thomas Quinn III confirmed that two stabbing victims had died of their injuries, including an 80-year-old woman who was stabbed at the home and a 56-year-old man who was attacked at the mall. The suspect was pronounced dead after being taken to an area hospital.

Four other people – including the elderly woman’s daughter – were injured in the stabbings, though there was no immediate word on their conditions.

In addition to the stabbings, police are also investigating whether the suspect was involved in a motor vehicle crash that happened on Myricks Street, not far from the scene of the first stabbings. There were no reports of injuries as a result of the crash.

Silver City Galleria is home to 125 specialty stores, a 12-unit food court, sit-down restaurants and a 10-screen cinema.
