Emergency crews in Ontario are responding to an explosion at an Indian restaurant in Mississauga, local officials and witnesses say. Multiple people have been injured, some of them seriously.

The incident happened just after 10:30 p.m. ET on Thursday when police and other emergency services were called to an explosion at the Bombay Bhel restaurant on Hurontario Street in the city’s downtown area.

The Peel Regional Paramedic Service said the total number of victims was not immediately clear, but estimated it could be as high as 15 to 20. At least two people have been taken to hospital in critical condition.

There was no immediate word on what may have caused Thursday’s explosion, but the bomb squad is on scene to check if explosives are involved. Peel Regional Police said the surrounding area has been cordoned off.
