A man protesting President-elect Donald Trump has been taken to hospital after he tried to set himself on fire outside the Trump International Hotel in Washington, D.C., just days before the businessman takes office.

The incident happened at about 9:30 p.m. ET on Tuesday when several items were set on fire in front of the Trump International Hotel on Pennsylvania Avenue, just a short distance from the White House. Several bangs were heard.

“I was trying to light myself on fire as an act of protest. To protest the fact that we’re electing somebody who’s completely incapable of respecting the Constitution of the United States,” the man told NBC 4, calling Trump a “dictator.”

The man, who was not immediately identified but told reporters that he lives in California, suffered a number of burns and was taken to an area hospital for treatment. He did not appear to have been seriously injured.

It is unknown whether the man will face any criminal charges.
